Movie Review: Fish Tank
When Mia's mother brings home a new boyfriend, all Mia wants to do is retreat into her dancing. Fish Tank is a journey that will touch your heart.
That's about where the parallels stop. Billy doesn't start out as being drawn to dance, but that's all that Mia can think about. Mia lives in Essex not that far from London and Billy comes from a norther mining town. Things get difficult for Billy because of the miner's strike, while things start to get better for Mia when her mother brings home a new boyfriend. The biggest difference here is that Billy Elliot focuses more on his dancing and than his situation, while Fish Tank focuses more on Mia's situation than her dancing - although both use dance as a coping mechanism.
But you should keep in mind that this isn't a "dance" movie. This is a movie about innocence, and how a 15 year old copes with her life, when that is lacking. There's an honesty of acting here that is probably no surprise, seeing as Jarvis was never in a film before, and in fact, this is her first acting job. But what a job she does! Jarvis shows us the brooding and moodiness that fits perfectly with an isolated teenager's attempts to cope with life in general. We see a child acting like an adult as well as an almost adult that can't stop being a child. The dialogue here has probably some of the best portrayals of how a normal teenager would talk that I've seen in a very long time. Mia is never portrayed as being either precocious or overly cutesy - but rather she's 15 and living in less than optimal conditions. If Mia is going to get out of her situation, it isn't because of her charm, nor her intelligence, but rather her street-smarts.
All this points to one hell of a marvelous script, combined with some very careful directing that got top notch performances out of both the seasoned actors and neophytes alike. Add this to cinematography that combines professional, almost documentary clarity with sections of shaky, hand-held amateur filming, done to further point up the dilemmas that Mia faces. I also like that the director believes in his audience's intelligence and allows us to figure some things out for ourselves rather than lay everything out on the table for us. Finally, while this is not a fast-paced movie, it never seems to drag, and there is always something to attract your interest.
In all, it is hard to find fault with this movie, and my complaints are few and far between. For instance, one problem I had was with Colin's (Mary's boyfriend) accent which was so mixed Irish/British with a heavy hint of American its both confusing and annoying to listen to. But its just little things like this, and nothing major, that make the film not quite, but very close to perfect, which also makes it all the more human. If you ask me, Fish Tank is a "must see" movie and I highly recommend it, and believe it deserves a strong four and a half starts out of five.
