Why Fish Tanks Need a Water Heater
When putting together a fish tank you'll typically need a water heater at least for most fish.
Fish like guppies and catfish need heaters to stay warm but not too warm. Different kinds of fish fall in a range of temperatures for which they can live. If the water in the tank falls below or above that temperature for a long period of time it can kill them.
Let's say their livable temperature range falls between 70 and 80 degrees. They can live in 70 degrees but if the water temperature dips below 70 and stays that way the fish may not be able to adapt. They may be able to live for awhile at 67 degrees but they will likely die at 60. The water will simply be too cold for them. At the other end they can live in 80 degrees but if the water rises above that the same goes. They will probably live for awhile at 83 degrees but will likely die when the temperature hits 90. The water will be too hot.
It's important to maintain a livable temperature within the range of the fish you have.
To check what the water temperature is at a glance there are thermometers that you can put in the tank, which will float at the surface. You can read one these as it floats or take it out to read. Another kind of thermometer sticks to the outside of the tank.
Normally you set water heaters for the temperature you want and you can go back and adjust it at any time. Once you have it the way you want it water heaters will shut on and off at the preferred setting. If the water is colder than the setting the water heater will come on. When it reaches the set temperature it will turn off. You can tell when the water heater is on when a red or orange light is showing.
Sometimes water in the tank gets too hot. If it does check the setting and if its too high turn it down to a setting within the livable range of your fish. If the water in the tank gets too cold turn the setting up within the livable range.
