Hanging Aquarium for Kids
Make a fake fish tank for kids to hang on a bedroom wall!
A clear pencil case is one way to make the unique aquarium. A pencil case made of clear plastic, one with a zipper to close, is the type to use. Don't have one? Use a zipper-lock bag instead! Any clear bag with a zipper-type closure works well to make the silly fish aquarium for kids.
Dollar-theme stores and discount department stores generally sell hand sanitizing gel or even hair gel that is colored. Although you can use clear gel to make the aquarium you'll make much more convincing water if you use blue gel. Purchase a large container of the gel to make the aquarium.
Open the zipper bag and fill it about three-fourths of the way full with the gel. This will create the water for the aquarium. Now, on to the fish. One way to make the fish is to use craft foam. Available in many colors the foam is perfect for creating assorted fish shapes. Cut simplistic shapes by hand, use stencils to draw them, or trace around fish shapes from a coloring book. Make all the fish the same or create different types. Use assorted colors and make one or more fish - depending upon how large the bag is that you used for the aquarium.
Instead of cutting your own fish from craft foam you can often buy plastic fish at a dollar-theme store or craft store. The simple plastic fish can be slid into the gel to complete the aquarium.
No matter what type of fish you're using, place them in the gel, then zip the pouch almost all the way shut. Gently expel excess air inside the bag before zipping it completely closed. Roll the gel around inside the bag to completely coat the fish and to position them how you want. After the fish are in place, they'll stay there, suspended by the gel.
There are other things you can add to the gel to create the look you want for the aquarium. Tiny, colored rocks or gravel bits, beads, fake plants, small starfish and similar things work well to enhance the overall look.
When the aquarium looks the way you want create a way to hang it. One way is to simply poke two holes, spaced apart, along the top, above the zipper. Place a piece of roping through one hole, tie a knot, then push the opposite end of the rope through the other hole, and tie a knot. Hang the aquarium by using this roping hanger.
Another way to make the aquarium hang is to tape it to a piece of cardboard. Lay it flat then use black or other color of tape to make a frame around the bag. Place pieces of the colored tape across the top, bottom, and both sides, and you'll duplicate the look of a real aquarium. Use an adhesive picture hanger to hang it on a wall. Kids will love it!
